Concept 1 of 10

Candlestick / OHLC

Plain talk

One candle is one chunk of time, and it tells you four things: where price started, how high it got, how low it got, and where it ended.

Pro talk — the correct term

A candlestick plots the open, high, low and close (OHLC) for its period. The body spans open-to-close; the upper and lower wicks mark the high and low.

  • Body = open to close. Wick = high and low.
  • Colour convention only tells you whether the close was above or below the open.
  • A long wick means price traded there and got rejected — participation, not prophecy.

Honest limit: A single candle is one period of information. It does not tell you what the next candle does.
